The historical account of thieves oil dates back to 1413 during the Bubonic Plague in France. During this time, four thieves were apprehended for stealing from the sick and dying, yet they never contracted the plague despite close contact.Intrigued by their immunity, the judge offered to spare them from being burned alive if they revealed their secret. The thieves, unemployed perfume and spice merchants due to the plague, disclosed that they used an essential oil blend applied to their hands, ears, temples, feet, and a mouth mask to protect themselves from infection.The judge honored his word, and the men were hanged instead of being burned.
